The 28-year-old sign has been attacked twice this year.

The project to protect the Mosgiel sign was given nearly $2000 yesterday.

Rotary Club of Mosgiel director David Brown applied for funding at the Mosgiel Taieri Community Board meeting yesterday, to increase the security around the Mosgiel sign, which can be seen by those travelling north on State Highway 1.

The 28-year-old sign had been attacked by vandals twice in the past year, Mr Brown said.

The club asked the board for $1800 towards the cost of the $2583 project to extend a fence to the cliff face and replace padlocks on gates.

The remainder would be covered by fundraising, he said.

Board member Martin Dillon moved the money be given saying it would protect the landmark, which was a community asset: ''It's known throughout the world.''

Board member Blackie Catlow seconded the motion, saying the sign served a purpose.

''It's where you find Mosgiel.''

All the board members at the meeting yesterday supported the motion.
