No agreement on King's

The battle rages on between King's High School's board of trustees and the Ministry of Education, despite a meeting between the two parties on Tuesday.

Ministry of Education enablement and support sector head Katrina Casey said ministry officials met the board in Dunedin on Tuesday night, where a ''good, constructive and open'' discussion took place.

However, she said the issues surrounding the establishment of an enrolment scheme at the school had not been resolved.

''Both parties are clear about the issues and we will continue to talk over the next couple of days.''

In late July, the ministry gave the school an ultimatum - establish an enrolment scheme by August 7 or it would appoint a limited statutory manager to do it for the school.

The ministry believes it is necessary because the school is overcrowded.

The school's board of trustees has so far, refused to establish an enrolment zone, saying it would challenge the ministry's appointment of a limited statutory manager (LSM) because it did not believe the school was overcrowded.

In a recent school newsletter, rector Dan Reddiex told parents the board of trustees had not changed its position but it was both ''prudent and important'' to try to work with the Ministry of Education.

While the ''avenue for dialogue and discussion'' remained open, he said the board intended to pursue its present path.

He told parents if both parties reached an ''impasse'', then the board would reconsider its options.

Neither Mr Reddiex nor board chairman David Booth have spoken publicly since agreeing earlier this month to meet ministry officials.
