Sisters Mary and Frances Barnett had family in mind when they decided to go bald in a fundraiser for the New Zealand Neurological Foundation on Saturday.

Frances Barnett (17) said she and her 21-year-old sister wanted to shave their heads to raise money for a ''good cause'', and settled on the foundation because of a personal connection.

Their mother, Ruth Barnett, was operated on for a brain tumour a couple of years ago, while their grandfather was in a special care unit for Alzheimer's now, Ms Barnett said.

''We'd been thinking about it for a while, and we'd just been trying to figure out the right charity to donate it to. And the Neurological Foundation seemed like the obvious choice.''

Dr Barnett was there on Saturday, and said when she realised why her daughters wanted to shave their heads ''it was quite moving, really''.

The sisters had asked for support from friends and family via a Give A Little campaign called ''Where has their hair gone?'' and had already raised close to $1000 for the foundation.
