An elderly couple sustained minor injuries in a crash in central Dunedin which caused significant traffic disruption today.

The crash, near Queens Gardens, involved three vehicles.

It is understood two of the cars collided at the intersection about 11.45am, before the vehicle containing the two older people reversed back into Crawford St, hitting a third vehicle.

Mark Gribben, of Dunedin, was driving the third vehicle. By chance, the elderly couple were his neighbours, he said.

The couple sustained minor injuries and were taken to Dunedin Hospital, a police spokesman said.

The drivers of the other cars were uninjured, but in shock, he said.

The cause was still being investigated and it was too early to comment on what, if any, charges will be laid.

Viridian Glass worker Rodney Fleming was also at the scene, as his boss had been the driver of the other vehicle in the crash. His boss seemed to be unhurt, but might be in shock, he said.
