Police are seeking the ''senseless'' vandals who pillaged a Dunedin childcare centre.

The playground of Corstorphine Kindergarten was ransacked sometime between Friday night and Sunday afternoon, Senior Sergeant Liz Waru said.

Vegetables were torn out of a garden, equipment was upturned and toys and equipment were strewn around the playground of the Lockerbie St facility.

''If anybody did see anything, we would be very interested in speaking to them,'' she said.

''This is just senseless. It's senseless vandalism of a community property.''

Corstorphine Kindergarten staff declined to comment yesterday.

Snr Sgt Waru said staff had left the gate unlocked so the public could use the playground during the weekend.

''Someone has got in ... and trashed it,'' she said.

''It's just senseless, it really is.''

The vandals had also taken some equipment from the neighbouring Corstorphine Community Hub and dumped it at the kindergarten, she said.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or with information should contact Dunedin police on 471 4800. Information can also be provided anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
