The Abbotsford Women's Institute celebrated its 60th anniversary at the Mosgiel Railway Station last Thursday with a special buffet lunch.

The women's group's diamond anniversary coincided with the birthday of Dorothy Rennie, who was presented with a special badge.

Avelda Howie, who joined Abbotsford in 1964 but now belongs to the Alexandra group, is a former national president of Women's Institute and was honoured earlier in the year for her 50 years' dedication to the Mid-Otago Federation of Women's Institute.

She said it was great meeting everybody from all over the district.

Many members had come from out of town.

''There are a lot of 'do you remembers' being talked about.''

Women's Institute offered opportunities to make friends and have fun while sharing experiences, Mrs Howie said.

The group was involved with the local community and enjoyed activities such as drama, handcrafts and lawn bowls.

Mrs Howie also said the Abbotsford Women's Institute lawn bowls team was particularly impressive, having won the national Challenge Trophy in the past.
