A ram-raid in Dunedin yesterday left a liquor shop manager ''shattered''.

Super Liquor Kaikorai Valley manager Raymond Win said the shop in Kaikorai Valley Rd was ram raided at 5.45am.

It was one of two raids on liquor stores overnight in Dunedin.

Mr Win said it was the first break in at the store in the eight years he had managed it.

''We take pride in the shop and to see it like that, the mess on the floor, it shatters you,'' he said.

CCTV footage showed a man getting out of a white hatchback car outside the shop and peering through its windows.

''The man then looked in the windows of Four Square Foodlands next door before returning to the car and parking it in line with the liquor store doors.

He then reversed the car at high speed into the store, leaving tyre marks on the floor when he braked. He hit a display stand, breaking several bottles of wine and spirits.

''He's lined it up on the doors - and boom.''

Mr Win said the man put at least 24 bottles of spirits - a mix of Jack Daniels and Jim Beam bourbon and some brandy - in the car before leaving.

Shop owner Trish McCarthy said she was ''shocked and devastated'' by the ram-raid. She had owned the shop for three years and it was insured.

''It's a nice quiet store. We've had one shoplifting incident since we've owned it.''

During the raid, more bottles of liquor were smashed than were stolen, she said.

Earlier, there had been another raid a few kilometres south. Thirsty Liquor Concord owner Sanjeev Nauhria said his shop in Main South Rd was ram-raided about 3.45am yesterday.

Glass in the doors was smashed in the raid but the doors themselves were not forced open.

Nothing was taken but the door and concrete step showed significant damage, Mr Nauhria said.

Senior Sergeant Ben Butterfield, of Dunedin, said a white Toyota Starlet containing smashed bottles was found abandoned in Wakari yesterday.

Police were reviewing CCTV footage of both incidents and wanted to hear from anyone who saw suspicious activity in either area.

Anyone with information could contact Dunedin police on (03) 471 4800, or Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
