Officers and AOS members stopped the car outside the Sports Dairy on Hillside Rd about 9am.

At least seven marked cars and two unmarked cars were involved in the incident, which the Otago Daily Times understands may have been gang related.

Police were not prepared to comment immediately after the incident but in a statement a police spokesman said it was a routine traffic stop that involved the AOS as a "precaution''.

The situation was resolved with no further incident and the public should not be concerned for their safety, the spokesman said.

Sports Diary manager Tammy McNaught (33) said she only realised what was going on after she heard ''all these sirens'' and looked outside.

She said a ''carload of guys'' were pulled over back from the lights at the intersection of Hillside Rd and Burns St.

''It all happened so fast.

''I was really scared,'' Ms McNaught said

Otago Tyres workshop foreman Kendall Henderson it all happened in the space of about 10 minutes.

There were two men in the front seat of the vehicle but Mr Henderson could not be sure if anyone was in the back seat.

''I definitely saw them get out with their hands in the air,'' Mr Henderson said.

''It was pretty quick.''
