Dunedin music institution the Oxo Cubans are celebrating their 21st birthday next month with two concerts at the Mayfair Theatre, in South Dunedin.

Band founder Craig Reeves said the concerts would include 35 people, from teenagers to those in their 60s, as they celebrated the band's career.

More than 270 people had played in the band's various forms over that time, he said, many using it as a springboard to bigger things.

Among those performing at the Mayfair on October 3 and 4 will be 20-year-old Dunedin singer Deina Susilo-Knox, discovered by the band when she was singing at the Otago Farmers Market. She had a ''huge'' future, Mr Reeves said.

''We heard her singing down there next to the railway station, and she just had people spellbound.''

Also featuring would be a 16-piece big-band and musicians and numbers from throughout the band's 21-year history.
