Pool? What pool? That is the reaction from many Port Chalmers residents when told they have a heated community swimming pool.

The Port Chalmers Pool officially opens for the summer season today, and to raise awareness of the opening, a barbecue and open day was held on the lawn behind the pool yesterday.

Chalmers Community Board chairman Steve Walker and pool duty supervisor said they were surprised by the number of people in Port Chalmers who had no idea they had a public heated swimming pool on their back doorstep.

''We've had a lot of people come through today, saying that they had no idea the pool was here,'' Ms Voice said.

The open day was one of many initiatives aimed at highlighting the pool's existence and encouraging more people to use it, including more equipment for children to play with in the pool and more advertising.

The pool is down a long driveway on Albertson Ave, which is now signposted.

The 30.48m, six-lane pool is open seven days a week.

It was opened in 1961 and was roofed and reopened in 1982.

The water is a balmy 28degC.

Lifeguards are available for hire for private functions, and a barbecue area is also available.

The Mosgiel Pool opened earlier this month, and the St Clair Hot Salt Water Pool will open for the summer season on Thursday.
