Taking the risk of opening a business has one owner with her heart in her mouth, but three new businesses have taken a punt on Mosgiel.

A hair salon, boutique and artisan market have joined the business community in the town.

Their owners say they are confident the town is growing, and ready to keep them afloat.

Census figures released last year showed Mosgiel and its surrounding areas had the largest growth in the city, increasing its population by 7.6% to 16,503 since 2006.

Hair salon Wanderlust's Mandy Van Turnhout said it was the right time to begin a new business in Factory Rd.

''It's perfect timing,'' she said.

Mosgiel was growing and becoming a popular destination.

Dakota Boutique's Kaylene Matthews left her husband Corey in charge of the Blend Espresso in Gordon Rd to open her business on the same road last week.

Her new shop was in a building that had been closed for about 18 years, and used for storage.

There was a gap in the market for a boutique selling women's and children's clothes.

It was ''really scary'' opening a retail business, but she also said Mosgiel was growing, with new subdivisions and child care centres meaning more families.

''That's my target market,'' she said.

The former Andy's Milk Bar site will become home on October 10 to a new weekly Saturday artisan's market, to be complemented by the Wooden Table food market on Fridays.

As well, Kelly Ennis and Kate Woodhouse will work on a catering business during the rest of the week.

Ms Ennis said it was ''absolutely a good time'' to open a business in Mosgiel.

''There's so many new subdivisions and new families.''
