A smoke-logged Dunedin villa is a reminder to get rid of dry grass and leaves to remove a potential fire hazard.

Dunedin City Senior Station Officer Pete Douglas said firefighters were called to the house in Bernard St, Kenmure about 3.30pm yesterday.

On arrival, firefighters found a pile of dry cut grass and leaves on fire outside the house.

The burning pile was beside the house and the smoke from the fire seeped under the house and through the floorboards, filling rooms of the villa.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze before donning breathing apparatus to enter the house and remove the smoke with a portable fan.

Mr Douglas doubted the fire was suspicious but a fire investigator was called to examine the grass pile.
