Thieves helped to get back on road

A farmer inadvertently helped a pair of female car thieves when he pulled the stolen Subaru they were driving from a Saddle Hill ditch.

Senior Sergeant Liz Waru said the black Subaru Legacy was stolen from a Thorn St address in Caversham about 8am on Wednesday and crashed in McMaster Rd, on the outskirts of Dunedin, about 5pm.

''A farmer helped get [the car] out of the ditch and on its way again,'' Snr Sgt Waru said.

''The car is in pretty bad shape.''

The farmer took a photo of the car and the car thieves but only found out it was stolen after deciding to report the crash to police.

Reporting the crash was likely ''an afterthought'' by the farmer, Snr Sgt Waru said.

The two women, aged in their early 20s, and the car had not been found, but police were following positive lines of inquiry, she said.

Anyone with information that might help track down the car and the people involved was asked to contact Dunedin police on 471-4800.

• A 2005 Subaru Legacy left by the owner in a rented car park in Tennyson St, central Dunedin, was found on blocks yesterday with all four wheels stolen.

The theft occurred between 6.30pm on Tuesday and noon yesterday.

Snr Sgt Waru said the car was on two blocks and was lying lop-sided in the gravel car park.

• Prescription medicine and money were taken from the glovebox of an unlocked vehicle at the end of a driveway in Hillary St, Liberton, on Tuesday night.

• A man, possibly high on methamphetamine, was arrested by police in a ''planned'' operation in Dunedin yesterday morning, Snr Sgt Waru said.

The man was unpredictable and someone police had been ''looking for for a while'', she said.
