Dunedin may be getting a royal visit next month - but if anybody knows for sure, they are not saying.

Prince Charles and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, are set to visit New Zealand in November.

The Otago Daily Times saw a group of uniformed police officers apparently checking the Toitu Otago Settlers Museum building recently, but asked if the group was scouting the site for a royal visit, museum director Jennifer Evans said she did not know anything about that, and even if she did, ''cannot say anything either way''.

Dunedin Mayor Dave Cull said he was aware the royals were looking at a range of destinations around the country and that no final itinerary decisions had been made.

Hoani Langsbury, who was involved in organising the powhiri for the last royal visit to Dunedin, that of Prince William, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, and their son Prince George in April last year, said he had not heard anything about a Dunedin visit during this royal tour.

When contacted, a spokesman for the Department of Internal Affairs said an itinerary for the visit had not been confirmed.

The department was in the middle of organising ''the best possible'' tour for Charles and Camilla.

He would not comment on whether the couple would be visiting Dunedin until plans were finalised.

The couple last visited New Zealand in November 2012 to mark the diamond jubilee of the Queen's reign.

Prince Harry visited New Zealand earlier this year, but did not stop in Dunedin.
