The Dunedin City Council is to make changes at an accident blackspot near Mosgiel in a bid to bring the crash rate down.

In the last five years there have been eight crashes at the intersection of Dukes Rd and Puddle Alley, about 2km northeast of Mosgiel, the most recent of which occurred in August.

Six of the crashes involved traffic turning right from the Dukes Rd slip lane colliding with traffic travelling north on Puddle Alley, which is an 80kmh area, DCC Network Development and Operations Manager Michael Harrison said.

''Most of these crashes have been minor; however, DCC and local police are concerned to the point that safety improvements are required,'' he said.

Mr Harrison said the skewed angle of the intersection meant motorists making the right turn from the slip lane had to turn their heads in an awkward way to see if both directions are clear.

The geometry to the south of the slip bay also made it difficult to get a good view ofapproaching traffic.

"We are proposing layout changes to the intersection to make it easier for turning traffic and through traffic to see each other as part of DCC's minor improvement programme," he said.

"In the meantime, we will be making some immediate safety improvements, including changing the intersection from 'give way' to 'stop', installing advanced 'concealed intersection' signage and trimming back vegetation in the area."

The short-term improvements will be completed in October and the layout changes are expected to take place this financial year.
