Official temperatures reached 27degC in the Dunedin city centre and 26degC at Dunedin Airport, MetService said.

Not to be outdone, Kakanui topped 31degC, Waikouaiti 30degC and Mosgiel 28degC, according to unofficial temperatures on the MetService website.

The thermometer on Portsmouth Dr showed 26.9degC at 3.21pm.

However, yesterday's official temperatures did not get close to the October record of 30.4degC, recorded at Dunedin Airport on October 28, 1977, a MetService spokesman said.

A gusty northwesterly was forecast to continue in Dunedin today with an expected maximum of 24degC.
