A new batch of blank utility boxes around Dunedin is waiting to be adorned with colourful murals - all that is needed are local artists.

Painted Chorus cabinets have been a familiar sight since work began in August last year, but more work remains to be done as many cabinets are still bare and vulnerable to graffiti.

The Dunedin City Council was on the hunt for artists to paint a further 12 cabinets, council urban design team leader Dr Glen Hazelton said.

''It's a great way for local artists to showcase their art.''

The first two rounds of the Chorus cabinet art programme were such a ''great success'' that a third round was ready for launch, he said.

Chorus was ''so impressed'' with Dunedin's painted cabinets that two of them would appear in its 2016 cabinet art calender, Dr Hazelton said.

Commissioned artists would be paid $1000 by Chorus, plus extra funds for paint and brushes.

Artists needed to make a proposal to the council, including a sketched design, a description of what the design meant, which cabinet they wanted to paint and a short description of their experience.

Twenty cabinets had already been painted but cabinets in areas including Roslyn, Caversham and St Kilda awaited the touch of a paintbrush. Proposals must be handed in to the council by noon on October 30.

Chorus would make the final decision and it was expected the work would be completed between December and March next year.
