Teen driver crashes after pursuit

An unlicensed teenager was fleeing police at speed when he T-boned another car, sending its driver to hospital.

The 17 year old boy failed to stop for a police patrol car, sparking a pursuit before the crash in Invercargill about 7.20pm yesterday, Senior Sergeant Ian Temple said.

It was unclear why the teenager fled police, but he was disqualified from driving.

The teenager, who was carrying two teenage passengers in his Mitsubishi Lancer at the time of the crash, smashed into the other vehicle at the intersection of Rockdale Rd and Tweed St.

The other car's sole occupant, a 49 year old woman, was taken to Southland Hospital, as was one of the 17 year old's passengers.

''Speed is a factor,'' Snr Sgt Temple said.

''A scene examination tomorrow will shed more light on that.''

It was unclear how fast the teen was travelling. However, a serious crash investigator would spend today at the scene to establish those details.

Both vehicles were extensively damaged, he said.

The 17 year old was taken into custody and interviewed by police last night.

The Otago Daily Times understands the police pursuit was called off shortly before the crash.

A St John spokeswoman said two people were taken to Southland Hospital by ambulance with minor to moderate injuries after the crash.
