Yes, the ''I Call Mosgiel My Home Town Reunion'' is going ahead this weekend, but, no, it won't be quite as big as first envisaged.

Former Mosgiel resident Mandy Walter has been helping organise the reunion, and after an early ''great response'', it was hoped that up to 300 people might attend, including a big group from Australia.

But after some people changed their minds, and some others dropped out through illness and competing family commitments, about 125 people will be attending the reunion, which starts on Friday.

Ms Walter said interest remained strong in the three-day event, which has switched to a smaller venue, the Mosgiel Station Function Centre, in Gladstone Rd, from the previous plan to use the Mosgiel A&P Showground.

About eight people were still coming from Australia, and one person was coming from the United Kingdom, she said.

It was ''unfortunate'' that more people were not coming but ''125 is still a good number''.

''I'm OK with it, we've talked about it amongst ourselves,'' she said.

And some people had pointed out that sometimes ''you can have a better time with a smaller crowd than a bigger crowd''.

''I'm still looking forward to it. It's going to be a good time.''

The reunion is for current or former Mosgiel people aged 40 or over.

It is not too late for more people to sign up for the event, by emailing mosgielreunion@outlook.com via internet, but they will have to be quick.

There will be a ''meet-and-greet'' session and photographs on Friday night , and a dinner and dance with live music on the Saturday night.

The event will end on Sunday afternoon with a barbecue and farewell session, at which children will be welcome.

Ms Walter (49) grew up in Mosgiel and spent more than 40 years there before shifting to nearby Fairfield about four years ago.

''I just hope that everyone has a great weekend and that there's people who are able to rekindle old friendships,'' she says.

Mosgiel had many attractions, including its quality shopping and sunny climate, but the biggest thing drawing visitors back was the people, a sense of shared time together, and being reunited with family and friends.
