Celebrations for Mornington School's 150th jubilee have started with a birthday party and a human domino chain.

The official 150th celebration is at Labour Weekend but 243 pupils started the ''10-day fiesta of fun'' on Monday.

Principal Brent Caldwell said it was a pretty special occasion for the pupils of the school that opened in 1865.

As for being the last man in the domino chain that stretched across the playing field and finished at the edge of the school pool, he was a little apprehensive.

''I'm hoping [the water] is up to 30degC,'' Mr Caldwell said.

Teacher Ross Tucker said the celebrations were about getting the pupils involved as much as possible.

''So we thought of interesting and exciting ways we could get the kids celebrating our birthday.''

One of those was the human domino chain. The pupils had been ''practising their falls'' for the past couple of days, he said.

Pupil Jayden Penese (11) said it was ''cool'' celebrating the 150th.

''Not a lot of people ... have an opportunity to do this,'' he said.

Other events would include a pool party today, a disco on Monday and an ex-pupils assembly on October 23.
