Meeting police dogs, completing a mini training course and trying on uniforms and protective gear were all part of the fun for hundreds of people who attended a behind the scenes look at the Dunedin Central Police Station yesterday.

The station was one of more than 20 across New Zealand which opened their doors to the public as part of the second annual National Police Open Day.

Groups of about 20 were given a 15 minute tour of the facility throughout the day, southern district communications manager Nic Barkley said.

The tours took in the staff gym, district command centre, district headquarters and holding cells, as well as demonstrations by St John ambulance, Land Search and Rescue, Red Cross, the Fire Service and the Armed Offenders Squad.

Police commissioner Mike Bush said the event was a chance for people to see how police worked to keep communities safe.

It was also a chance for people to meet local officers and for police to thank the public for its ongoing support, he said.
