The consent process for Mosgiel's new Countdown is not done yet, with an appeal over ''a few'' consenting issues being lodged by the supermarket giant.
Countdown received resource consent earlier this month to build its new Gordon Rd store, although it had a number of conditions attached.
Immediately after the consent was granted, a Countdown spokesman said the decision was ''a very significant milestone'' and that Mosgiel residents could have ''a very high degree of confidence'' the store would open as planned.
That confidence still existed yesterday. Countdown's general manager of property Adrian Walker told the Otago Daily Times the company was ''looking forward to starting work on the new Countdown store when the appeal process is completed''.
But that process would have a bit longer to run, as the company had submitted an appeal on ''a few'' of the conditions included in the consent, Mr Walker said.
''Late last week, we submitted an appeal on a couple of the consenting conditions that we believe do not have any sound resource management reason for being included.''
The most significant of those issues was the resource consent's provision that a car-park walkway on the site include a canopy to protect pedestrians from the weather.
Mr Walker said that structure would come at a very high cost, yet would offer little benefit to members of the public, as it would connect streets that were themselves uncovered.
Despite the appeal, Mr Walker said Countdown was ''confident that these issues can be resolved through mediation''.
