Ultrasound cases rebooked

Thirty-five non-acute patients have had ultrasound procedures put off because of the Dunedin Hospital asbestos scare, the Southern District Health Board said yesterday.

Parts of the clinical services building remain off-limits while areas are progressively decontaminated, but most patient services are unaffected.

"Since the discovery of asbestos, all acute and urgent [ultrasound] scans have been completed - 20 patients since last Thursday,'' the board said.

Deferred hospital cases were being rebooked. Asbestos testing continues, this week in an ancillary building to the clinical services building housing electrical transformers and the carpenter's workshop.

Decontamination starts today in a corridor beside the radiology department.
