The Dunedin Hospital molecular laboratory and central stairwell reopened this week as asbestos cleaning continued, the Southern District Health Board said in a statement.
Some parts of the hospital had to be closed just over two weeks ago because of asbestos contamination after swab testing was carried out in the clinical services building.
''The central stairwell is now back in use after environmental cleaning and follow-up testing.
''However, the lifts will remain closed until the remedial environmental clean has taken place in the sixth floor plant room, lift plant room and lift shaft. This work is currently being scoped,'' the statement said.
The ultrasound suite's waiting area had reopened.
Cleaning work still had to be carried out in a back corridor near the ultrasound suite, but that area was expected to reopen early next week.
The mortuary was now the main focus for cleaning.
It has been partially open, but some users, such as the Ministry of Justice, have had to make alternative arrangements.
''Our team is still assessing all the options. In the meantime, access to the viewing room remains available,'' the statement said.
