Ben Currie (6), of Mataura, tries his hand at Warhammer 40,000 as part of the International Games Day celebrations at Dunedin Public Library yesterday.

It was one of many table-top games on display as the Otago Miniature Tacticians Society used the international celebration of gaming to host its inaugural ''Librarycon'' event.

The society is New Zealand's oldest war-gaming club and demonstrated games such as Warhammer, Flames of War and Wings of Glory during the event.

Libraries' events co-ordinator Kay Mercer said the games day provided a great opportunity to promote reading among a teen audience.

''Most of the games also have books associated with them ... so this is also a great opportunity to promote books and reading in an area which is likely to be of particular interest to teens.''
