Weather watch for headwaters

A sever weather watch is in place for the headwaters of the Otago lakes and rivers despite temperatures in the region pushing up into the mid-20s.

MetService issued the watch for the possibility of more than 100mm of rain falling from yesterday afternoon until this evening about 10km east of the Main Divide with the possibility of ''heavy rain'' spreading further east.

The watch comes on the back of a strong, moist northwesterly flow covering the South Island.

MetService meteorologist Rob Kerr said the east of the South Island was looking dry but ''significant amounts of rain'' would fall in western parts.

Dunedin city got to a high of 24degC yesterday with similar temperatures expected today and tomorrow. Thursday would be the peak for the week at 25degC.

Oamaru got to 24degC yesterday while Alexandra hit 23degC, Queenstown 21degC and Balclutha 20degC.

Temperatures would be much the same for the rest of the week.
