Jennifer Schack has only just moved back to the Taieri.

She shifted into Dunedin about a year ago to do away with the long commute. But, just a few months ago, she decided to start a business out of her garage. So she moved back.

''It feels like coming home,'' she says.

And soon, she will be performing one of the lead roles in a musical about the infamous fire that swept through Seacliff Mental Hospital in 1942, killing 37 people.

Although Mrs Schack has performed in plays before, it will be her first musical.

''Working with this cast has ... just been a lot of fun. It's been the highlight of my week for the last three months.''

The musical is dark, Mrs Schack says, and figuring out how to play her character, Lucille La Bont, was ''interesting''.

''She's actually a lot like me. I wasn't sure where to draw the line between Lucille and myself.''

Mrs Schack is one of three Mosgiel residents in the musical - dance performer and former paralympic swimmer Jenny Newstead and her husband, Kevin Phillips, will play alongside her.

Ms Newstead says the musical is ''a really big challenge'' for her.

''I've pushed my skills beyond what I'm normally able to do ... and I've pulled my husband into it, too,'' she laughs.

But Mrs Schack says she would prefer not to think of herself as a Mosgiel-resident cast member.

''The whole crew is quite close - I [wouldn't] want it to cause a divide,'' she says.

''It's a really emotional story, and it's really important that we all feel safe in the group. Because we have to explore some pretty dark places.''

• Seacliff: Demise of Ward 5, written and directed by Renee Maurice, opens on Saturday, December 5, at Mayfair Theatre.
