Greazy Dogs Motorcycle Club members leave Dunedin on the Southern Motorway yesterday.

The gang members were heading to Invercargill for the Burt Munro Challenge.

Alcala Motor Lodge owner Gary Perreau said 57 members of the gang's Tauranga chapter stayed at his accommodation in George St and over the road at Owens Motel.

The gang members, all males, were aged from early 20s to late 60s, and riding mostly Harley-Davidsons.

They were great guests, he said.

''They were well behaved and nice and polite,'' Mr Perreau said.

The gang members intended to return to Tauranga via the West Coast, Mr Perreau said.

Senior Sergeant Brian Benn, of Dunedin, said police had spoken to the gang members and had no issues with them.

Motorcyclists on southern roads needed to be aware of heavy rain and strong wind gusts, Snr Sgt Benn said.

He advised riders and motorists to drive to the conditions and reduce their speed where necessary.

The 10th Burt Munro Challenge began with a hill climb at Bluff yesterday, but the New Zealand Supercross Championship in Winton was cancelled last night because of strong wind.

Races will be held at Oreti Beach today, at Teretonga and Oreti Park Speedway tomorrow, and on a street circuit around Bill Richardson Dr and Arena Ave in Invercargill on Sunday.
