A contractor works near a digger moving rocks on St Clair Beach this week.

The work, done by Fulton Hogan, was maintenance on a temporary ramp providing access for bathers and rescue boats at the eastern end of the esplanade.

Dunedin City Council roading maintenance engineer Peter Standring said heavy seas which caused damage over winter and ''even the last couple of weeks'' meant it was a battle to keep the access open.

''We're hoping it will see the season out, but it would be a brave man to guarantee it.''
