A motorcyclist is dead and another motorist is seriously injured after a crash involving as many as five vehicles south of Oamaru.

The motorcyclist, whose age is unknown, died at the scene after the crash about 5pm today, a St John spokeswoman confirmed.

Road blocks and detours are in place and traffic is backed-up south of the crash, which is understood to have involved at least two cars, a van and a motorcycle.

Senior Sergeant Ian Temple said one person was dead and one seriously injured, but would not comment further at this time.

The St John spokeswoman said the seriously injured patient was transferred to Dunedin Hospital by helicopter and another patient was taken by ambulance to hospital with minor injuries.

One person needed to be cut from their vehicle, which was heavily damaged.

It is understood one of the vehicles is a Rural Post van.

It is unknown if any others are injured.

The crash occurred near the intersection of Waianakarua Rd on State Highway 1, about 20km from Oamaru.
