Support for garden

Chinese community groups are providing growing support for the Dunedin Chinese Garden.

The garden is administered through the Toitu Otago Settlers Museum, and both are owned by the Dunedin City Council.

Museum director Jennifer Evans said the museum had recently hosted a lunch for Jin Zhijian, the Chinese Consul-general in Christchurch.

Dunedin members of the recently formed Chinese Young Professionals Association had also attended and had indicated they would like to help out with other activities involving the garden.

When the Moon Festival was celebrated in late September, activities had included a cooking class, a lantern-making workshop, garden tours and many traditional Chinese performances.

The Chinese Seniors Association, members of the Chinese Students and Scholars Association, and Otago Polytechnic events management students helped with the activities.

''Positive publicity'' had also resulted from Chinese language week from September 7 to 13, and the National Chinese Week Association had congratulated garden staff on the activities.
