Police have confirmed that the body found in South Dunedin this morning is that of a 51-year-old woman.

A yard in the industrial area in Strathallan St is cordoned-off and guarded by officers after the woman's death was reported to emergency services early this morning.

An inquiry has been launched into what police are continuing to describe it as an "unexplained death''.

ESR and police staff remain at the site this afternoon and are continuing a scene examination.

Police said the woman's family had been advised of the death and were being offered support.

St John confirmed they sent an ambulance to the scene about 2am this morning.

''The person was sadly deceased at the scene,'' St John said.

The Fire Service provided tarpaulins to close the scene to public and several vehicles were visible in the yard.

Police say until a post-mortem is completed, they will be treating the death as unexplained.

The post-mortem is expected to occur tomorrow morning.
