Firefighters have contained a blaze resulting from a controlled burn-off getting ''out of hand" near Brighton today.

A Fire Service spokesman said a landowner in Highland Rd called firefighters about 11.10am when the controlled burn of gorse spread to nearby trees.

Three helicopters and firefighters from stations at Lookout Point, St Kilda and Roslyn and Rural Fire responded to the blaze.

About 20 firefighters remained on site but the fire was now under control, Otago Rural Fire Authority deputy principal rural fire officer Jamie Cowan said this afternoon.

Some Dunedin-based firefighters were being relieved of their duty and rural resources were replacing them.

No residents were evacuated.
