The material in question may be better described as interesting rather than fashionable, but curtains are set to storm into vogue as the very latest style in Dunedin.

The Dunedin Curtain Bank is using its stock-in-trade fabric as the raw material for a fashion show in March next year.

Curtain Bank Trust chairwoman Virginia Driver said the organisation would benefit from the proceeds from ticket sales for the show, to be held at Otago Girls' High School on March 12.

The event was being held during iD Dunedin Fashion Week and the organisation had applied to have the show as part of the week's events, Mrs Driver said.

"That's our intention.''

While iD used older students and professional designers, the Curtain Bank event, Raise the Curtain, was restricted to those aged between 13 to 22.

Budding designers were given curtain material at a registration event yesterday, and encouraged to make clothing or accessories.

Designers Dallas Synnott and Dallas Cunningham were on hand to provide inspiration and advice and the Otago Polytechnic would use the event as one of its fashion students' first-term projects.

Mrs Driver said she was hoping to get sponsorship for prizes and was looking forward to what the young designers came up with.

"I'm excited to see what might come out of it.''
