The Otago Regional Council is moving towards helping to develop a collaborative regional growth strategy.

ORC chairman Stephen Woodhead recently reported to councillors on a dynamic approach taken to regional growth planning by Environment Canterbury.

In a recently tabled report, ORC chief executive Peter Bodeker said he had engaged a Wellington consultancy to prepare a briefing document for the ORC on a "possible Otago Regional Growth Strategy''.

Regional councils in Northland, Central North Island, Canterbury and Southland had led the establishment of "regionally-based growth strategies''.

These strategies had brought together the development activities of both regional and territorial local government, as well as development agencies and the commercial sector, Mr Bodeker said.

The ORC had expressed a desire to consider an Otago strategy.

A presentation on "how we may approach the development of such'' would be delivered to the ORC in January, and the Mayoral Forum in February.

This was before consideration for the 2016-17 annual plan, he said.
