The car's windscreen was broken, but the male driver escaped serious injury and was assessed at the scene by St John Ambulance staff, emergency service officials said.
No-one was transported to hospital after the accident, St John South Island communications adviser Ian Henderson said.
Dunedin central firefighters also attended, helped move the vehicle clear of the roadway, and used a chainsaw to cut up the fallen branch, Fire Service officials said.
