Temporary liquor ban proposed

A temporary liquor ban covering part of North Dunedin, including outside Forsyth Barr Stadium, will again be considered by the Dunedin City Council.

Councillors meeting on Monday will be asked to approve a police proposal that would restrict alcohol from 6pm until 1am on February 24, 25 and 26.

The exclusion zone would cover the area around Forsyth Barr Stadium, Logan Park and surrounds, stopping at Harbour Tce, Albany St and Ravensbourne Rd.

A report by council staff said police and the Otago University Students' Association staff had both requested a temporary ban, which had been effective in the past in reducing alcohol-related offending at Orientation.

The latest temporary ban would coincide with the three biggest Orientation events in the area, including the Toga Party and live music acts, which together were expected to attract 12,000 people.

The OUSA had requested a slightly shorter temporary liquor ban, stopping at midnight each night, while police preferred a 1am finish.

Council staff recommended councillors endorse the police request, but councillors would consider the options at Monday's pre-draft annual plan hearing.
