The Southern District Health Board paid out more than $123,000 for employee terminations in the last financial year.

Termination payments usually feature in the board's annual report, but were absent from the last report, which was released just before Christmas.

The board provided the figures to the Otago Daily Times this week in response to an Official Information Act request.

They include payments made in personal grievance cases, but the nature of the individual payments is not spelled out.

The single biggest amount was $29,800, among 14 termination payments totalling $123,064.

It compares with $98,000 for nine termination payments in the previous year, 2013-14.

The board did not respond to a question about why the figures were not included in its annual report.

In a statement, health board chief executive Carole Heatly said the payments were made after a "well-defined'' process of approvals "depending on the nature of the payment which would include HR [and] legal''.

"In an organisation of 4500 people there will be staff receiving payments for a number of reasons, for example, annual leave owing, when they leave the organisation, which are confidential between employer and employee.''
