When the line on Jordan Pearson's rod took off in the Dunedin Harbour basin yesterday, he knew dinner was going to be spectacular.

No sooner had the keen 15-year-old fisherman cast his line off Birch St wharf, set his rod in a holder and started baiting more hooks, a woman came over and said: ‘‘Your bob has gone.''

‘‘I didn't even notice at first. I was too busy putting more sprats on hooks.

‘‘So I quickly ran over and started reeling it in, and there was a big salmon on it.

‘‘It was hard to reel in - it was fighting me.

‘‘I didn't have a net so I had to climb down the ladder to the water and lift it out.''

It was his first salmon, and he estimated it weighed about 6kg.

The Berwick teen had decided to spend yesterday at the wharf, fishing and soaking up the sun before returning to school at Taieri College today.

‘‘I love fishing. It's fun and I like the taste of fish.

‘‘This will make a great dinner - the perfect way to celebrate the end of the holidays.''
