A 22-year-old Dunedin man was taken to hospital following a domestic spat and car crash early yesterday.

A mangled, abandoned car that was smashed into a power pole in central Dunedin was brought to police attention about 5.40am yesterday, Senior Sergeant Darryl Lennane said.

Police subsequently located its driver and he was processed for driving while intoxicated.

The car had crashed into a power pole in Stuart St, near the intersection with Smith St, although the circumstances leading to the crash were unclear.

Police were also investigating a domestic incident that was believed to have preceded the crash, Snr Sgt Lennane said.

They were yet to speak to witnesses to that incident and the 22-year-old had not been formally charged in relation to either incident at present.

After being processed for excess breath alcohol, he was taken to Dunedin Hospital for treatment for a head injury suffered during the crash.

A blood sample was taken at the hospital, Snr Sgt Lennane said.

Inquiries were continuing.
