Public warned after five cars broken into

Police are again reminding Dunedin residents to take valuables out of their cars or keep them out of sight, following five car break-ins on Saturday night.

Southern District Command Centre Senior Sergeant Brian Benn said a handbag and laptop were taken during a spate of thefts from cars.

The pink handbag was taken from a vehicle parked in Opoho Rd after the front passenger side window was smashed.

Across the city, in Manor Pl, a Sony Vaio laptop and charger were taken from a vehicle, again after a passenger window was smashed.

In nearby Stafford St, a car window was smashed in an attempt to take a car stereo.

Snr Sgt Benn believed the offender may have been disturbed in the process and left without the stereo.

Two other vehicles in Stafford St were entered and searched after passenger-side windows were smashed. Nothing was taken from either vehicle.

Snr Sgt Benn did not believe the Opoho break-in was related to the Stafford St and Manor Pl incidents.

He advised residents to always lock their cars securely, close all windows, lock their boots and take valuables with them or keep them out of sight.
