The success of a recent heritage and family history event at the Toitu Otago Settlers Museum could mean it will be repeated regularly.

Graeme and Denise Shillito, of Dunedin and formerly of Christchurch, said they enjoyed taking part in the heritage and family history project, on Otago Anniversary Day.

The museum and the Otago Settlers Association joined forces for ‘‘The Smith Gallery: Who are you descended from?'' event.

The two organisations welcomed descendants of early settlers, and others with queries about their ancestry to participate in the project.

Settlers association volunteers, including association president Susan Schweigman, were in the Smith Gallery to help with inquiries.

Visitors could also use the museum's research centre to check for connections with their ancestors.

The Shillitos enjoyed using the centre, and Mrs Shillito said the heritage project was a ‘‘really good'' event.

A museum spokesman said consideration would be given to a similar event in future.
