A 'possible explosive device' whose discovery led to the blocking of a Dunedin wharf today has turned out to be a grenade-shaped container.

Workers were evacuated and police blocked entry to Leith Wharf on Fryatt St around midday after the discovery of the case

Acting Sergeant Jo Ammundsen, of Dunedin, said the device turned out to be a replica grenade containing BB gun pellets.

Police have lifted the cordon and said they would take no further action
