A burglary at a Dunedin playcentre has prompted educators and parents to be proactive about security and involve the community.

In February, Roslyn/Maori Hill Playcentre was targeted by thieves, who took a laptop, camera, iPod, cash box containing about $100, cheque book and USB stick.

A fair organised by the centre for April 16 will have a silent auction and funds raised will go towards beefing up security.

Fair co-organiser and parent Claire Wilson hoped about $2000 would be raised.

"It [the theft] came as quite a shock for a lot of people'' she said.

"It certainly affected a lot of our parents.

"We decided we needed to think about what we were going to do after the loss.

"It's a way of feeling more secure and feeling like we're doing something proactive.''

The auction would feature items including hampers, a signed Otago Volts shirt and gift vouchers.

Playcentre education officer Becky Toschi said the fair was also about boosting morale in the community.

"Everyone loves a fair, don't they?

"People will be able to come in and look around our centre ... and see what we do on a weekly basis,'' Mrs Toschi said.
