Being a "pie lady'' at the University of Otago Campus Shop comes with challenges but Sandra Gillam says it has also been "so much fun''.

Mrs Gillam (69) joked that she knew she would get a job on campus because a psychic once told her so.

But, 31 years after she started, and on her last day at work yesterday, she could be forgiven for peering into her own crystal ball and seeing plenty more good things in come, in retirement.

She left school at 15 and never envisaged being at university. She has enjoyed interacting with students and staff over the years.

"I've loved it here ... all the students are always lovely and the academic staff are always lovely.''

Some of the students she once served have returned as parents of the latest students.

The campus shop was often busy but she enjoyed its relaxed atmosphere and had worked longer in campus retail than she would have elsewhere in the city, she said.

"It's a different wee world down here. We've had a great team at work.''

With her welcoming smile, she has always been ready for a laugh with students, staff, and colleagues.

She has done plenty of other work at the shop over the years but has become known as the "pie lady''.

After arriving at work each day about 7am, she has prepared the pies and sausage rolls, heating some in the oven and keeping the pie-warmer cabinet stocked with fresh supplies.

She started work in the University Union building in February 1985.

Then, she was on $4.85 an hour and worked part-time while raising a family with husband Allen.

The shop moved into the Link about 15 years ago and she moved with it.

Her husband also retires later this month after 50 years with the Ministry of Fisheries. They will holiday together in Australia, and then she plans to join gardening and walking groups.

"I'll have more time for family and friends and definitely more time with my grandchildren.''
