Taking part in the Relay for Life University of Otago 2016 are Aquinas College residents (from left) Ash Watson (18), Ailish Sullivan (19), Campbell Irvine (18), and Georgia Steans (18), all of Christchurch.

The event featured 55 teams and raised more than $60,000 for the Cancer Society.

Otago Southland Cancer Society chief executive Mike Kernaghan said it was "humbling'' to see so many young people with a "social conscience'' take part.

Team numbers had to be capped for capacity reasons.

The event, also open to Otago Polytechnic students, was first held in 2014.

The opening ceremony was held on Friday night, and the event wrapped up on Saturday morning.
