Warning of gales for South

Severe gales for coastal parts of Southland, Clutha and Dunedin are forecast for late this afternoon or evening, MetService says.

In a statement this morning, MetService said a strong west to southwest flow was forecast to spread on to the lower South Island today, bringing gales to coastal parts of Southland, Clutha and Dunedin.

The strongest winds were expected from about Bluff to the Otago Peninsula, with gusts of 120kmh likely for a time late this afternoon or evening.

The wind strength had the potential to damage trees, powerlines and unsecured structures and make for hazardous driving conditions, especially for tall sided vehicles and motorcycles, the statement said.

West to southwest gales were also expected in these areas between tomorrow afternoon and Tuesday morning and there was a slight risk the winds could become severe.
