A meeting between protest organiser Clare Curran and the Southern District Health Board yesterday was positive, the Dunedin South MP says.

SDHB bosses called the meeting ahead of tomorrow's protest outside Dunedin Hospital at noon.

Ms Curran said she reiterated there was no intention to disrupt hospital access, and no issues were expected in that regard. The only disagreement at the meeting was over the Compass Group's performance in its new 15-year food contract, and Ms Curran told them the community was unhappy about the outsourcing.

She asked about out-clauses, and was told the board would have to nominate a breach of contract to government entity NZ Health Partnerships, which handles the contract.

‘‘So what I now need to know is what constitutes a breach.''

The meeting would be the start of regular catch-ups. Ms Curran said commissioner Kathy Grant declined to state the projected deficit for the next financial year. When the Otago Daily Times pointed out an estimated deficit figure of $34.9million was available in the board's annual plan on its website, Ms Curran questioned the value of the meetings.

‘‘What's the point of them coming to see me then if they're not going to give me information?''

Ms Curran said she was pleased Labour health spokeswoman and deputy leader Annette King, would attend the protest. Labour is part of the Real Meals Coalition, which comprises New Zealand First, the Green Party, Invercargill Mayor Tim Shadbolt, unions, and Grey Power.

The Real Meals Coalition is calling for the food service contract to be terminated.

When asked about the deficit figure, Mrs Grant said it was not disclosed at the meeting as it was only an estimate.
