Presbyterian Support Otago won the supreme award at the 2016 Trustpower Dunedin Community Awards last night for the work of its volunteers.

The award recognises the efforts of 600 volunteers throughout Otago in the likes of the buddy programme, and the food bank.

Accepting the award on behalf of a large contingent from Presbyterian Support Otago (PSO), fundraising co-ordinator Michelle Gerwitz said the group was ‘‘a bit blown away''.

The organisation would not be able to run without its volunteers, Ms Gerwitz said.

PSO, which received $1500 prize money and a trophy, will represent the region at the national awards in Rotorua in March next year.

In total, the power company gave away $5000 to community groups at the awards held at Toitu Otago Settlers Museum.

Winners of the individual categories: heritage and environment: Animal Rescue Network; health and wellbeing: Dunedin Night Shelter Trust; arts and culture: Friends of the Globe Theatre; sports and leisure: Dunedin Community Salmon Trust; education and child/youth development: BreakAway Surf Survival Holiday Programme; youth community award: Alana Donkin, of Otago Girls' High School.eileen.goodwin@odt.co.nz
