An apartment fire in St Clair on Saturday is being treated as suspicious by fire investigators.

Thick black smoke could be seen by residents across the city as several fire appliances tackled the Lock St blaze, which threatened to spread to three adjoining apartments.

Emergency services attended the fire following several 111 calls made about 9.15am.

Neighbours said a man in his 20s lived in the unit, but he was not home at the time.

A neighbour, who declined to be named, said she looked out the window to see flames and black smoke coming out a front window of the property.

"He's gone out on his bike. Hate to think what will happen when he gets home.''

A St John spokesman said a woman in one of the adjoining apartments was treated by ambulance staff at the scene but was not taken to hospital.

No other injuries were reported.

Central-North Otago fire risk management officer Stuart Ide said a fire investigation started on Saturday and was continuing yesterday.

Police want to hear from anyone who was in the vicinity at the time and may have seen anyone acting suspiciously.
